About Joe Chan
Joe Chan is a prominent Malaysian interior designer and architect, best known as the founder and principal of DesignTone Interior Practice (DTIP). He trained in architecture in Australia and, after over a decade at senior management in international design firms, launched his own award-winning studio .
His versatility shines through a wide range of commercial and hospitality projects—from cafes and coworking spaces to large mixed-use developments such as 168 Park Mall in Selayang.
Joe embraces a “chameleon” design philosophy, believing that each project should evolve uniquely based on context, function, and narrative—rather than adhere to a fixed style. His process emphasizes storytelling and fluidity—exemplified in how he drew inspiration from natural elements like water droplets to inform the cohesive, flowing design of 168 Park Selayang.
Beyond design, Joe is deeply involved in shaping the profession in Malaysia and internationally. He has served as Honorary Treasurer of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) since 2018, and is an Executive Board Member of the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) for 2022–2024.
